The Window

‘The window’ is a music studio, lounge, and jam room designed for a music composer. The client, in his early 40s, a full-time industrialist, recently resumed the composition and production of music in pursuit of his passion. Inspired by Matisse’s ‘Open Window’, the lounge was designed as his window into a whole new world. The colours and textures are inspired by the painting and reflect onto the walls, floor, and furniture throughout the space.

site & about

It is a three-storey lounge located amid the cacophony of Mumbai’s most commercial neighbourhood that is home to some of the biggest production houses in the country. The lounge contains various scales of spaces to host people from within and outside the industry. It has a small recording studio on the upper level and a jam room in the basement, which can be occupied temporarily by musicians & independent artists of the industry for music making.

design

A bespoke concierge table made in a bright yellow Jaisalmer stone greets you at the entrance of this 13 feet tall lounge on the ground floor. A symphony of coloured stucco walls highlights the offices and meeting rooms. These are softened by large panes of fluted glass, held together by matte black, slim-line metal partition systems.

The floor of the waiting lounge is raised in matte black mosaic tiles, offset by an olive green wall with fuchsia highlights. The rest of the floor is a classic black and white tile with a cast in-situ terrazzo, separating the office from the lounge. A winding staircase, laid in a combination of shotblasted and polished basalt with brass inlay highlights, takes you one level up to the private lounge & recording studio and down to the jam room in the basement.
